Protecting your eyes while you’re on the go is essential and getting the right activity sunglasses for you can make things a lot easier. Whether it’s relaxing at the beach, cooking up a storm in a sunny back garden or paddleboarding on a crystal-clear day, the right pair of sunnies really help.
But if you don’t fancy the ultra-modern look of some truly ‘outdoor’ sunglasses, then where do you look? Well, we’ve picked out some of the best glasses which give you the best of both worlds.
Oakley HSTN – £222

Oakley is, of course, one of the biggest names in the eyewear business. While it does produce a range of sunglasses tailored towards many different sports, we’re big fans of the HSTN as something of an all-rounder. At £222 they aren’t cheap, but with a quirky arm design, they’re definitely for those who like to make an impact.
Equipped with grippy unobtanium nosepads they’ll provide a secure fit while Oakley’s PRIZM lens technology gives a great view out in all types of sun.
Izipizi #L – £40

Izipizi has nailed the ability to make good-looking sunglasses which don’t cost the earth. The #L is a great example of this, bringing a classic frame shape which blends with full UV category 3 protection for unshakeable sun-blocking ability.
But with a lightweight design and grippy, curved arms the #L will still be up for more intense activities.
Sungod Sierras – £65

If you’re after the ability to really personalise your next set of shades, then look no further than Sungod. It has dialled into the custom sunglasses market and now, you can choose from all manner of lenses and finishes when putting together your new sunglasses.
We’re big fans of the Sierras, which feature a classic shape and fit but come with a lightweight frame design and Sungod’s 8KO lenses.
MessyWeekend Brooklyn – £65

MessyWeekend is a relatively new name on the block, but that isn’t stopping it from making a big impact with its range of sunglasses. These Brooklyn shades sit within the firm’s ‘active’ range and while they might be pointed towards more vigorous activities, we reckon they’d be just as suited to kicking back in a lounger on holiday.
The tortoiseshell finish gives the Brooklyn a classic appearance while the oversized design ensures that you’re getting great coverage from the sun.
Rapha Dalton – £140

Rapha is a brand which has a primary focus on cycling and while these Rapha shades are designed to be used on two wheels, they’re just as well suited to life off them as well. Available in three shades, the Daltons have interchangeable lenses so you can tailor them to different conditions and lighting, ensuring that they’re set up as the right activity sunglasses for you.
Plus, they’ve got a curved design to make them a little comfier while on the move, and an adjustable neck strap could be a really handy feature if you’re spending some time on the water.
Pit Vipers ‘The Son of Beach Exciters’ – £89.69

How could we not mention Pit Vipers? They’re some of the most outlandish ‘specs out there at the moment and while we might be tempted to go for the full wraparound-style designs like the ‘Playmate’, it’s the slightly more understated – but still quirkily-named – ‘The Son of Beach Exciters’ which get our vote.
Sure, the black-and-white spots may not be for everyone, but with rubber on the nosepads and arms they’ll definitely stay in place while fully polarised purple lenses will help reduce glare.
