Though it’s always nice to have some box-fresh hiking equipment, it’s safe to say that a lot of it carries quite a big price tag. In this day and age of ever-increasing prices, most people have less cash lying around than usual so the used market provides a very tempting option when it comes to buying walking boots.
It also has its ecological advantages, too, lessening your impact on the planet by reusing a pair of shoes which might otherwise be thrown away. However, what do you need to look out for if you’re planning to buy used? Let’s take a look.
Visit in-person whenever possible
Though the vast majority of second-hand sales will be done online, you still can’t beat getting up close and personal with a pair of boots to make sure that everything is as it should be.
You’re able to get a handle on the quality of a pair of boots and also get a closer eye on potential damage or defects.
Don’t be worried about dirt or scuffs

Boots are meant to be dirty, so you shouldn’t be put off a slightly used set of boots. Of course, we’re not saying to take home the grubbiest set of boots out there, but some light dirt and scuffs aren’t going to drastically change the make-up of a set of hiking boots.
Plus, we’d always advise giving them a thorough clean once you’ve got them home before re-proofing them.
If they smell, walk away
No matter the type of cleaner you use, you’ll struggle to clean up a really smelly pair of boots. Not only is it unpleasant, but background smells could hint towards nasty bacteria in the boots that won’t do your feet any favours.
If they smell bad, then simply leave them alone and try again somewhere else – you’re not doing yourself any favours by putting up with a rank pair of boots.
Avoid heavily-used boots

Though you might be able to get a really cheap pair of second-hand boots if they’re heavily worn, it really isn’t a good idea. Soles which have already been worn down will have moulded to their previous owner’s feet and, as a result, they won’t fit your feet well at all.
Trying to push through this could cause some serious pain and lead to further issues in your knees and back. Simply, if they’re worn down they’re not worth it – no matter how much of a bargain they are.
Don’t be afraid of upcycling boots at home
If you’ve found a good set of boots without too much wear but are in need of some updating, then remember that there are plenty of options to do this on a budget. Some good cleaners will completely reinvigorate a pair of boots while all sorts of treatments can help uppers like suede and leather look as new once again.
Plus, a new set of laces can do wonders for a tired pair of boots – so give it a try and you could find yourself with a new set of walking boots that’ll last far longer than you might expect.
