Yeti has expanded its range of backpacks with the introduction of the new Cayo. It’s designed to offer a bridge between softer backpacks like the Ranchero and the rough-and-tough Panga. In a way, it could offer the best of all worlds.
But what do you need to know about this backpack before you dive in? We’ve got the key facts to remember.
It’s weather resistant

One of the things that Yeti is best known for its its rugged products and the Cayo looks to be no different. The brand says that this backpack is weather-resistant rather than completely waterproof, however, though we’re sure it’ll still shrug off some rain. It’s made from Yeti’s DryHide material and even gets RF welded seams for extra protection.
If you’re looking for a completely waterproof option, then the Panga remains your best option.
There are three sizes to choose from

The Yeti Cayo is available in three sizes – 15, 25 and 35 litres. We’d expect the smallest of those to be the best option for shorter days, while the 35-litre version brings the kind of capacity that could prove helpful during commutes or day hikes. At present, just the 15- and 25-litre versions are available to buy in the UK, though we expect the larger one to become available soon.
In terms of colourways, you’ve got black and olive. Again, we expect more colours to join the ranks soon.
Extra support for heavy days
For when you’re carrying a lot more, the Yeti Cayo offers removable waist and chest straps to help balance the weight. We’ve seen these put to good use on the Ranchero and they’ll no doubt prove helpful if you’re on a longer trip.
They use a sliding design to ‘hook’ onto the main shoulder straps. As a result, you can take them on and off in an instant.
Plenty of pockets

A good backpack is nothing without decent pockets and Yeti appears to have taken this mantra on board with the Cayo. There’s a quick-access pocket at the front of the backpack, while a smaller one sits right at the top of the Yeti Cayo too.
Inside, you’ll find extra space and Yeti says that the Cayo can even accommodate a two-litre hydration reservoir if you opt for the larger size.
Cooling back panel
Keeping cool is essential and the Yeti Cayo shouldn’t suffer from ‘damp back’ syndrome. In fact, it’s got a ComfortComb mesh back panel to help keep the air moving and circulating when you’re on the move.
Laptop compatible
Wanting to use the Cayo as a commuting backpack? Opt for the larger model and you’ll find that it gets an interior sleeve which can handle a 13-inch laptop.
Yeti says that the 15- and 25-litre versions can take a small tablet instead, so these could be good for those shorter trips instead.

The Yeti Cayo is available at the brand’s website now, priced at £200.
